Oscar 2010 Predictable but with Some Surprises

At the 82nd Academy Awards today ‘The Hurt Locker’ won 6 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Film Editing while ‘Avatar’ won only 3 Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects and Best Art Direction. The small-budget movie, about a film about a bomb disposal unit in the early part of the Iraq War, which barely managed to recover its money and made US$21 million, is one of the lowest grossing films to be nominated in the post ‘Star Wars’ era, defeated ‘Avatar’, the US$2.6 billion grossing film hands down; despite both getting 9 nominations each. tfc18.com had written about ‘The Hurt Locker’ as the movie people missed out in 2009 but the film has been winning awards at festivals since its release in 2009 summer.

With ‘The Hurt Locker’ director Kathryn Bigelow created history by becoming the first woman to win the Best Director Award, after winning the same award at BAFTA and DGA. As soon as legendary Hollywood actress Barbra Streisand came in to present the award for Best Director she said "Well, the time has come!" As she announced Kathryn Bigelow, it was greeted with a loud standing ovation and lots of shrieks. Kathryn Bigelow also a co-producer of the movie accepted the award saying "There's no other way to describe it -- it's the moment of a lifetime". She dedicated her honor "to the women and men in the military who risk their lives on a daily basis... may they come home safe." She also said "I hope I'm the first of many, I long for the day when that modifier can be a moot point." Earlier Mark Boal, writer and co-producer who won Best Oscar for Screenplay paid tribute to the director Kathryn Bigelow saying "all of the soldiers still over there and those who have died" and to his father, who passed away a month ago.

Actress Sandra Bullock who won Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in ‘The Blind Side’ as a forceful mother who brings a homeless teen into her well-off family; paid tributes to her "lover, Meryl Streep" even calling her one of the "best kissers." She said "Did I really earn this or did I just wear you all down?" But her voice cracked with emotion as she dedicated her award to "the moms that take care of the babies and the children, no matter where they come from," possibly referring to her role as stepmother to celebrity mechanic husband Jesse James' three children and then turned to her own mother describing her as firm but supportive. The actress who has given 3 hits in last 2 years said she plans to display her Oscar and Golden Raspberry trophies side by side to remind her of the highs and lows of the movie industry. Jeff Bridges who won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance as a country singer in ‘Crazy Heart’ said "Thank you, Academy members!. Thank you, Mom and Dad for turning me on to such a groovy profession. They loved showbiz so much, and I feel like an extension of them. This is as much for them as it is for me." His parents were both renowned film and TV actors.

Mo'Nique, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress as an abusive mother in ‘Precious’, also thanked the Oscar voters "for showing that it can be about the performance and not the politics. I want to thank Miss Hattie McDaniel for enduring all that she did so I don't have to". She said she was wearing a gardenia in her hair in tribute to McDaniel, because she wore one for her acceptance speech 70 years ago. Hattie McDaniel was the first African-American to win an Academy Award. She won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the epic film ‘Gone with the Wind’ (1939). She also thanked Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey, who helped director Lee Daniels land a distribution deal for the movie saying "Because you touched it, the whole world saw it". She also said "I am a standup comedian who won an Oscar”. The success of her role "was so not about my acting career. This role was about my life, to teach me not to judge."

Christoph Waltz who expectedly won Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in ‘Inglourious Basterds’, the only winner from multiple nominated ‘Inglourious Basterds’ said "This is your welcoming embrace, and there's no way I can ever thank you enough, but I can start right now, thank you." The Austrian-born actor joked that winning an Oscar — and receiving it from presenter Penelope Cruz — was "uber bingo." The Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film surprisingly went to ‘The Secret in Their Eyes’ from Argentina as ‘The White Ribbon’ from Germany and ‘Un Prophete’ from France were the favorites. Robert Stromberg, who won Oscar for Best Art Director for ‘Avatar’ said of an illness that nearly killed him 13 years ago, and the newfound sense of purpose he's since experienced. Michael Giacchino about his tear-jerking score for "Up" said "A lot of people have said to me, `You made me cry,' and it was only because I cried myself when I watched that movie. Hopefully, I can express to you how I felt through the music."
